The Index Pages
A study of hand-lettered index cards from an old library drawer, photographed against a single sheet of warm paper.
The cards came from a friend clearing her father's reference collection. There are a little over four hundred of them, all lettered by the same slow hand between 1962 and 1988.
I photographed each card flat, with a single warm bulb, on a large sheet of unbleached cotton paper. No color correction other than a slight lift in the shadows.
The series is presented as small prints (12 × 17 cm) in unnumbered sets. The idea is that a set can be arranged and rearranged by the person who keeps it.
A short essay accompanying the series is available as a folded broadsheet on request.
